Family Resources
- Car Seats [Safe Kids Coalition Buckle-up Line, Champaign County;353-4932]
Provides car seats and booster seats to income-eligible clients. Free inspections and fittings of car seats by appointment.
- CRUISING kids at the Children’s Hospital of Illinois [Peoria; 877-277-6543]
CRUISING kids is a state-wide special needs child-passenger safety resource center. It is important that all children ride safely on each and every trip. Children with special needs may be able to ride safely in a conventional car seat; however some require more specialized restraints. CRUISING kids can assist families in choosing the correct car seat; as well as allow them to test seats out before they are purchased. The only cost associated with the program is when a family needs a restraint on a short term loan and then there is a base fee of $15.00 charged.

Having your Baby and Family Education Program [Carle Foundation Hospital, 611 W. Park St., Urbana; 383-6962] Prenatal and family education program provides expectant parents with information.
Early Childhood Programs

Provides a variety of support and education programs for parents of children, birth through age 5 including playgroups, workshops, a telephone helpline and toy and book lending libraries. Child care is available during programs.

Head Start/Early Head Start is a federal program that provides comprehensive, developmental services for children birth to 5 years old who reside in Champaign County, including children with special needs and expectant mothers.

Free preschool instructional program for Champaign Unit 4 Schools for children at least 3 years. Free screening test on speech, language, hearing, social and motor skills.

Offers support, education and long-term home visiting to first-time families. Families that are expecting their first child or have a newborn under two weeks of age can call for information. At weekly home visits, services offered include developmental screenings, information and activities to encourage healthy development and support of the parent-child relationship as well as linkage to community resources.

Provides developmental screening and diagnostic evaluation of Urbana children ages 3 to 5. Also offers classroom programs for children identified as needing special educational intervention.

- Carle ECHO Program (Expanding Childrens' Hearing
Opportunities) [Carle Foundation Hospital, NCW4, 602 W. University Avenue, Urbana, 383-4375] A family-centered program with team members who provide evaluations, treatment options, parent education and therapy for children with hearing loss from birth to age 21. The ECHO
team provides close follow-up and supports all communication modes.

- Developmental Services Center (DSC) Children’s Services [1304 W. Bradley, Champaign;
359-0287] DSC provides services and supports for children and adults with developmental disabilites. DSC’s Children's Services Department is an Early Intervention Program serving children and families in east central Illinois. This comprehensive program provides therapy and support services for infants and young children who have developmental delays. - Hearing Education Program [The Christie Foundation, 101 W. University Ave., Champaign;
366-9669 Voice or 366-1387 TTY] Provides hearing screenings for infants at Provena Covenant Medical Center, as well as speech-language-auditory therapy for hearing-impaired children in a home-based, parent-infant program. - Champaign County Birth to 5 Council of Families and Agencies
A local interagency council that works to identify young children with special needs and ensure that they and their families receive a coordinated, comprehensive, family-centered system of support in Champaign County. The council encourages parent participation and has funding to help defray costs of transportation and child care to enable parents to attend meetings. Meets 3rd Thursday of the month 8:45-9:45 at Mental Health Center of Champaign County, 1801 Fox Drive, Champaign Room 151.

- Down Syndrome Network Serves families with children with Down Syndrome in Champaign County. The DSN offers support to families mainly by being a source of current information for parents, professionals and the general public. The DSN meets monthly, has a parent library and a free newsletter.

- Self-Help Center-Family Service [405 S. State St., Champaign;
352-0099] Provides information and referral to self-help and support groups. Listings of a wide variety of groups can be found on Web site: selfhelp.prairienet.org. Also provides a consultation services to assist individuals wanting to start new groups or improve the functioning of existing groups.
- LaLeche League [355-3738] Provides support, education, information and encouragement to breast-feeding mothers.
- Infant Replay - Mother of Twins and More Support Group For mothers of multiples and expectant mothers of multiples (twins, triplets, or more). By sharing joys and concerns of raising twins, members enhance parenting skills, provide encouragement, and enjoy their "double blessings." Meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, 7:00 p.m., at Grace United Methodist Church, 2004 S. Philo Rd., Urbana. Library has information on multiples & raising children. - Parent-to-Parent Resource Network [359-0287] Provides an informal support network for parents of young children with special needs. - Padre a Padre [384-3541] A parent support group for Spanish-speaking parents with children birth to 5 years of age. - PROUDD [630-978-1615] Parents (Peoples) Resource Organization for the Understanding of Disabilities and Developmental delays (PROUDD) is a nonprofit organization developed to provide support, resources, education, networking and advocacy to anyone living or working with children with a disability or developmental delay primarily in the Champaign-Urbana community and surrounding areas.

- R.O.C.K.-Raising Our Children's Kids
An informational support group for grandparents and relative caregivers raising grandchildren. Members share experiences, receive support and identify resource information and educational materials.
