Minutes

March 25, 2008

Attendance:

Cheri Adams (Child Care Resource Service), Carol Carlton (Child Care Resource Service), Becci Cline (CFC #16), Felicia Gooler (Developmental Services Center), Christie Lee (Parent Co-Chair), Mary Anne Wilson (Mental Health Center of Champaign County), Cherylanda Trice (Crisis Nursery)

Agency Announcements:

Felicia Gooler reported on a DSC sponsored Brown Bag for parents to be held at DSC on March 25, 12 – 1. Champaign – Urbana Special Recreation staff will present information about summer programs for young children with disabilities. Limited child care is available.

Old Business:

  • Child and Family Connections #16 Report: Becci Cline presented CFC #16 data.
  • Two Provider Recruitment sessions will be held in April. April 16, 2008: Bloomington Public Library, 4PM to 7PM. April 29, 2008: University of Illinois Extension Office, Onarga, IL from 6PM to 8PM. RSVP to Lori or Kim at 217-442-8097.
  • Workshop Announcement: Early Intervention: Supporting Families and Caregivers in the ‘hands-on’ work with children; May 6, 2008. Go to: www.illinoiseitraining.org

New Business:

Discussed transition activities and decided on targeting the following: 1) set up a sub-committee of schools, EI, and parents to identify needs; 2) design a brochure highlighting the process; and 3) conduct a series of Brown Bag meetings for parents. At the next meeting, we will discuss short and long-term goals for transition.

Website: The website has not been updated since January 2007. The council is unsure of the contract and why requests are not being answered. Felicia will contact Bernard to follow-up regarding payment. Also, Felicia will talk to Mary-alayne Hughes about the UI student who was assigned to the council for this year to act as liaison between the council and the UI. Updates to the website include updated resources, ongoing updates to the calendar, inclusion of meeting minutes and agendas, and the possibility of posting relevant trainings and workshops.

Budget: The budget for this year needs to spent out by June 1. The council approved the following:

  • printing and mailing brochures
  • mailing brown bag flyers
  • sending posters to faith based communities in the county
  • Provider recruitment: provide money for the meal and publicity; look at Fall for dates

The council also decided to try to submit an article to the “Central Illinois Family” magazine instead of an advertisement.

PUNS: The Regional Planning Commission supports, through DHS, the Prioritization of Urgency Needs for Services (PUNS) data base. All children enrolled in early intervention should be enrolled in the PUNS data base. Members of the PUNS group conduct a home-visit to interview parents regarding the anticipated services for their child over the next 5 years. Inclusion in PUNS gives an estimate of the unmet needs of people with disabilities in Illinois and identifies needs by geographic regions. The council decided that we should invite PUNS staff to the council meeting sometime in the Fall.

Next meeting: April 22, 2008 at 8:45 at the Mental Health Center on Fox Drive, Champaign
