MinutesJanuary 18, 2007Attendance:Cheri Adams (CCRS), Carol Carlton (CCRS), Mary Hensley (CU Early), Becci Cline (CFC#16), Mark Driscoll (Champaign County Mental Health Board), Felicia Gooler (DSC), Christy Lee (parent co-chair), Ruth Myers-Dunnum (Washington Early Childhood), Angela Reinhart (U of I Extension), Marilee Wright (Mental Health Center of Champaign County), Marcia Zumbahlen Agency Announcements:The Down syndrome network 2007 Buddy Walk is scheduled for September 15 at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. Marilee Wright mentioned that the Mental Health Center will be doing training on the ASQ-SE in March Ruth Myers-Dunnam mentioned there is talk of expanding the early childhood program in Urbana, possibly to have classrooms in an elementary school. Angela Reinheart had information about Megan Faure, author of Baby Sense possibly doing a book reading/signing in Champaign/Urbana and thought the council may be interested in helping sponsor this. She will get more information. She also let the council know that the “Your Young Child” disks have been updated and is available on CD. Felicia Gooler mentioned that DSC was looking into having a representative from creativeplay.org come do a workshop highlighting the importance of play and sensory integration. Old Business:Minutes from December were approved. Becci Cline reported for Child and Family Connections. Statistics were distributed for Champaign County. Becci will hear soon if the grant to fund advertisement on city busses was approved. Becci also let the group know she and Ruth Myers-Dunnum, and Marcia Zumbahlen will be making presentations at the Carle forum on 2/6 at 12:30 and 3/7 at noon to the pediatric doctors and nurses. She invited others to attend and mentioned that having parents there would be very helpful. Christy Lee will try and recruit some parents to attend. Birth to 5 will be providing the lunches. Becci is also part of a group that is looking at curriculum development for infant development and mental health careers. Birth to 5 will be providing dinners for this meeting. Flyers were passed around listing many CFC trainings and workshops. New Business:It was brought to the council that the CDC in launching a campaign to identify children with developmental delays as early as possible. Becci Cline mentioned that a list of the members e-mail and phone contact information would be very helpful. Christy Lee will make this list. Those who attended the Mental Health Board Meeting were pleased with the discussion, but noted that there are large gaps and not all needs are being met, in regards to infant mental health. There was discussion about the importance of developing relationships and how that relates to mental health. Parent friendly flyers will be developed and sent to in home caregivers, even start, head start, CCRS newsletter for distribution to families to encourage developmental screenings. Felicia distributed a table of centers that were screening, what method they used, their difficulties, how many children they screened, where they reported, etc. We began discussing the findings in the table and there were several other places that would be contacted to add (Little Wings in Rantoul, Center for Women in Transition). Next Meeting:The next meeting will be February 15, 2007 from 8:45 to 9:45 at Mental Health Center of Champaign County at 1801 Fox Dr. in Champaign.
