Agency Announcements

Mark Driscoll announced that there is a panel discussion being held January 17, from 6-8pm at the Illinois Terminal Building concerning social/ emotional development and consultation within childcare centers in our community. Things to be discussed are what is or isn’t happening in Early Childhood settings regarding mental health. What are some of the issues and/or concerns that providers face?

Old Business

Minutes from November were approved.

Becci Cline reported for Child and Family Connections. She distributed statistics for Champaign County. She reported that there were 20 referrals in the month of November. Becci also informed the council that a grant proposal has been written to fund early intervention advertisement on local city buses. This effort would hopefully raise Champaign County’s low referral rate.

Becci Cline also informed the council that Ruth Meyers-Dunnum, Marcia Zumbahlen and herself would be making presentations to local doctors and nurses regarding early intervention referral. They will be providing training and lunch to the doctor’s and nurses.

New Business:

Felicia Gooler reported on the local director’s meeting that she attended. They expressed the following concerns:

  • They are not aware of what is available in our community for children with concerns and/or special needs.
  • Teacher’s need additional resources regarding Developmentally Appropriate Practice
  • Local provider’s were not clear on the procedures regarding screening; who does them and where they report to
  • Staff turn over is so great that it is hard to keep staff trained on screening procedures

January’s Birth to 5 Council will be dedicated to agencies that are screening children. We will find out where they are reporting to and who they are referring to.

Next Meeting

The next meeting is scheduled for January 18, 2007 from 8:45-9:45 at Mental Health Center of Champaign County at 1801 Fox Dr. in Champaign.
