Old Business
- Council reviewed minutes. One amendment was made to the October minutes; Angela Reinhart was not actually in attendance at the meeting, however, there was a representative in her place. Minutes with amendment were approved unanimously. Mary Anne Wilson motioned to approve the minutes as amended and Marc Driscoll seconded the motion.
- Jeanne Murray announced that there are many directories still in storage at Carle and wanted to know how we should get them out into the community. Pat Boce recommended contacting the Public Libraries for distribution. Another suggestion was to get them to the local school districts for distribution.
- Becci Cline reported on Child and Family Connections #16. She announced that there were about 30 referrals made in Champaign County last month.
- Jeanne Murray passed out a survey regarding speakers for upcoming council meetings. Each member voted on which two speakers would be most beneficial. The choices were: Therapeutic Listening, Augmentative/Assistive technology (Communication), Auditory referrals (who, when, how and why), or Funding Sources.
- Hollie Ronk reported that she had completed an updated member contact list and passed it out to the council. She also reported that she had finished public screening calendar for Champaign County and had submitted it to CFC.
- Amy Santos passed out the amended budget.
- Amy Santos brought up a concern about a comic strip that has been running in the local newspapers. “Clear Blue Water” has been appearing in the News Gazette. The comic strip follows a family that has a child that has been diagnosed with Autism. The concern was that the comic was not providing a positive image regarding children with autism and the supportive services that are available to them and their families. E-mail was written to the author addressing the concerns and a response was received (the e-mail correspondence was passed around for everyone to read). Mary Anne Wilson suggested writing a letter to the editor as well as coping it to the author, letting the public know about resources available to children with disabilities including autism.
New Business
The Strategic Planning Committees had breakout sessions to discuss action plans to accomplish the goals they have set.
- Provider Recruitment Committee- Will try to have an informational meeting for prospective providers. Lisa Mosley will contact perspective providers including students at area colleges. The committee decided a Monday evening in the spring would work out the best.
- Child Find & Transition/Public Awareness- They are working on getting the “red flag” checklists out into the community as well as updating the binders. They would like time to be set-aside in the February meeting to update the binders.
It was decided that the Council will have guest speakers addressing areas of concern. On December 16, 2004 child find and reporting will be addressed. March 17, 2004 reporting audiology screenings/referrals will be addressed. June 16, 2004 Augmentive Communication will be discussed.
